Paths of glory, an unfair film?

This 1958 film set in world war 1 starring Kirk Douglas was not shown in France until 1975.
As to whether it was banned or just that the French government applied enough pressure is a case of who you ask it seems.
But was it proper to obstruct this film, was it an unfair portrayal of the way things were?
Turkey never kicked up a stink about 'Midnight Express'...(a very dishonest film) and the Russians didn;t whine about James Bond.
Should the French Government have kept out of it or not?
